Originally built in 1141 in Segovia, Spain, the medieval St. Bernard de Claivaux monastery was purchased by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who dismantled the church and boxed the stones in 11,000 numbered wooden crates, packaged with hay. Due to a hoof-and-mouth disease quarantine, the hay was burned, the stones were not repackaged properly and the crates were put in storage. Finally, in 1952, several Miami developers spent $1.5 million and over a year and a half reassembling most of the stones back into a church. Today, "The Ancient Spanish Monastery" is a popular place to hold weddings and receptions and is located west of Greynolds Park.
